The visual language of biophilic design has made moss ubiquitous in commercial interiors over the past decade. Almost all of it is preserved rather than living — a genuinely different product with genuinely different properties — and the conflation of the two causes a great deal of disappointment among people who buy a wall expecting a garden.

Moss has moved from hobby shelf to interior feature, appearing in preserved wall panels, restaurant installations and residential built-ins. This dispatch separates the living from the preserved, examines where each genuinely works in a home, considers what interior designers get wrong about maintenance, and looks at how to integrate a living build into a room without turning it into a piece of equipment surrounded by cables.

Preserved moss: what it actually is

Preserved moss is harvested, then treated with a glycerine-based solution that replaces the plant's water content. The result retains colour and texture indefinitely but is not alive: it does not grow, photosynthesise, purify air or require light or water.

As a material it is excellent. It is soundproofing, tactile, dimensionally stable and needs essentially no maintenance in a stable indoor environment. Reindeer moss — actually a lichen, Cladonia rangiferina — is the most common form, along with preserved sheet and pole moss.

Its limits are humidity and light. Below around forty percent relative humidity it becomes brittle; above seventy it can mould, since the glycerine treatment is not a fungicide. Direct sunlight fades the dye within months. A preserved wall in a dry, bright office will look tired in two years, which is rarely mentioned at the point of sale.

Living installations and what they demand

A living moss wall is an entirely different proposition: it needs irrigation, drainage, grow lighting, an accessible service route and someone competent to maintain it. Commercial installations of this kind are effectively small horticultural facilities embedded in a building, and they carry a service contract for good reason.

In a residential setting the practical scale is much smaller. A built-in vivarium in a joinery unit, a run of vessels on a shelf, or a single large tank in a room used daily — these work because they are within reach and within the maintenance capacity of one person.

The most common residential failure is a living build placed where nobody goes. Maintenance depends on attention, and attention depends on proximity. Put the build where you will see it every day and it will be watered; put it in a hallway and it will be dead by spring.

Integrating a living build into a room

Deal with the equipment first. A living build needs light, and a bare clip lamp on a bookshelf undoes the aesthetic entirely. Recessed LED strips in a shelf soffit, a small fixture concealed behind a fascia, or a pendant positioned as a deliberate design element all work; a visible plastic grow light does not.

Cable routing deserves five minutes of planning. A timer plug behind furniture, a cable clipped along the rear of a shelf, and the transformer out of sight makes the difference between an installation and an experiment.

Consider viewing height. A tray build reads from above and belongs at coffee-table or sideboard height. A vertical tank reads from the front and belongs near eye level. A bottle garden reads through curved glass and rewards being seen against a window with backlight. Matching the vessel to the sightline in the room is the same discipline as matching composition to viewing geometry inside the vessel.

Where designers get maintenance wrong

The most persistent misconception is that a sealed terrarium is zero-maintenance. It is low-maintenance, which is not the same thing. Trimming, occasional ventilation, glass cleaning and an annual carpet renovation are all required if the piece is to look good in year three.

The second is the belief that any plant sold for a terrarium will suit a specific room. Light, temperature and the position relative to heating are the actual determinants, and they vary enormously between apparently similar rooms in the same building.

The third is scale creep. A large installation is disproportionately harder to maintain than a small one — more surface to trim, more depth to reach, heavier vessels to move. Two well-kept twenty-centimetre builds look considerably better in a room than one struggling sixty-litre tank, and they cost less to make and to run.

A realistic residential brief

If you want moss as a design element in a home, the honest options are three. A preserved panel where you want texture and permanence with no maintenance, understanding that it is a material rather than a plant. A small living build where you want an actual garden, sited within daily reach and lit properly. Or a group of living vessels treated as a collection, which allows individual pieces to be renovated or replaced without disrupting the whole arrangement.

The third option is the one that ages best. A shelf of five vessels of different sizes and vintages, each on its own timeline, reads as a considered collection and forgives the occasional failure. A single hero installation carries all the risk in one place.

Whichever route, budget for the light. It is the component people economise on and the one that most determines whether the planting still looks alive at the two-year mark. Everything else in a moss landscape can be corrected later; a build that has spent two years under-lit cannot be recovered, only replanted.

  • Reindeer moss is a lichen — a symbiosis of fungus and alga — rather than a true moss, and it cannot be grown in a terrarium at any practical rate.
  • Claims that preserved moss walls purify air are marketing. Preserved material is biologically inactive and performs no gas exchange whatsoever.

Can preserved moss be brought back to life?

No. The plant tissue is dead and its water has been replaced with glycerine. Watering it will simply cause it to mould.

Does a living moss wall need a plumbed water supply?

Large commercial ones usually do. A residential wall under about a square metre can be hand-misted or run from a small reservoir pump on a timer.

Will a terrarium raise humidity in a room?

A closed one, effectively not at all — that is the point of the seal. An open tray contributes a little in its immediate vicinity, but not enough to change a room's comfort.

What is the best room for a living moss build?

A cool room used daily with indirect natural light and stable temperature. Bathrooms are often suggested and are frequently too dark; kitchens are often too warm and too greasy.
