A Year in the Vessel: A Seasonal Care Calendar

Three variables drive the indoor year: photoperiod, which halves between midsummer and midwinter at temperate latitudes; ambient humidity, which collapses when heating runs; and temperature range, which widens near glass in both extremes.
Indoor growers often assume a sealed vessel is seasonless. It is not. Day length, room temperature, heating systems and window angle all swing across the year, and a build maintained identically in January and July will struggle in at least one of them. This calendar sets out what actually changes month by month in a temperate indoor setting and what you should adjust in response.
Late winter, January to February
This is the hardest period for most indoor builds, and the culprit is heating rather than cold. Central heating routinely drops room humidity to thirty per cent or below, and every vented vessel loses water far faster than its owner expects.
Check water levels weekly rather than monthly. In a partially sealed vessel, the drainage reservoir that lasted three months in autumn may empty in five weeks now, and cushion mosses browning at the tips in February are almost always thirsty rather than diseased.
Move vessels away from radiators and hot-air vents entirely. A metre of separation is not enough if the airflow is direct; put the vessel on a different surface rather than trying to shield it.
Early spring, March to April
Light returns quickly at this point in the year, and a vessel that sat in a dim corner all winter can suddenly receive twice the daily light integral without moving. Watch for bleaching on the side nearest the window.
Spring is the correct moment for the annual thinning: trim overgrown pleurocarps, lift and re-seat compacted cushions, and remove any accumulated leaf litter. The plant has maximum recovery capacity now, and growth will close the gaps within weeks.
If the vessel has been closed all winter, air it for an hour or two on a mild day. A single air change resets the internal gas balance and clears the low-grade musty smell many closed builds develop by March.
Late spring to early summer, May to June
This is the growth season and the period where most builds look their best. Feed nothing — mosses do not want fertiliser — but do watch density. Fast growth in May can bury a carefully placed stone by July.
Sun angle is the main hazard. Windows that received no direct sun in winter can catch an hour of it in early summer as the sun rises further north, and one hour of direct sun on sealed glass will cook a vessel.
Springtail and isopod populations peak now. A visible surge is normal and self-limiting; it usually reflects a pulse of decomposing organic matter rather than a problem.
High summer, July to August
Heat is the real risk, not light. Above roughly twenty-eight degrees, most temperate mosses stop photosynthesising net-positively and start burning reserves, and a sealed vessel on a warm windowsill can exceed forty.
Move builds to the coolest room you have and increase venting. A partial seal in July is safer than a full one even for species that prefer full closure the rest of the year.
If you go away, close vessels partially rather than fully to slow water loss and move them off any surface that gets direct sun. Do not leave a full seal in a hot room unattended for two weeks.
Autumn, September to October
Conditions ease and this is the second good window for structural work. Replanting done in September establishes before the light drops, which is not true of work done in November.
Ambient humidity is typically at its annual high before heating begins, so vessels need less attention. Use the quiet weeks to clean glass properly, inside and out, before winter light gets scarce.
Review lighting now. If you intend to add a lamp, install it before the November drop rather than in response to it, so the plants adjust gradually.
Early winter, November to December
Photoperiod bottoms out. Growth slows to almost nothing and that is normal — a moss holding steady in December is doing well. Resist the urge to compensate with more water, which is the classic winter mistake.
Watch the cold-glass effect: a vessel touching a single-glazed window at night can sit several degrees below room temperature and develop persistent condensation on that face only. Pull it fifteen centimetres back from the pane.
Reduce misting frequency by roughly half compared with June. Slower growth means slower transpiration, and the same routine that was correct in summer becomes overwatering now.

- Keep a one-line monthly log of water added and anything unusual. Twelve lines a year turns vague impressions into an actual maintenance record.
- The biggest single-day risk to an indoor build is the first hot afternoon of the year, because nobody has moved anything yet.
- If you use a supplementary lamp, put it on a timer that changes with the season rather than a fixed twelve hours; steady light through the winter is fine, but matching the natural rhythm looks more natural in the room.

Do moss terrariums need a dormancy period?
Not strictly, but temperate species benefit from a cooler, slower winter. Reduced growth from November to February is expected rather than a sign of a problem.
Should I water more in summer or winter?
Summer usually, because of faster transpiration — but heated winter rooms with very dry air can rival it. Judge by the vessel, not the calendar alone.
When is the best time to replant or restructure?
Early spring or early autumn. Both give the planting several weeks of decent light and moderate temperature to recover before conditions get harsh.
Is condensation on one side of the glass a problem?
It usually means that face is colder — typically against a window. Move the vessel back from the pane and the asymmetry resolves.
