Bryum, Ceratodon and the Tough Mosses Growing on Your Pavement

Urban mosses live through drought, heat, salt, pollution and foot traffic, and they do it by being extremely good at shutting down. Understanding that strategy explains both why they survive a pavement and why they die in a humid jar within a season.
The mosses colonising kerbs, walls and gutters are the toughest bryophytes most people will ever encounter, and they are almost entirely ignored by the terrarium hobby. Bryum argenteum: the silver thread
Silver-green, almost metallic, growing as tight low cushions in pavement cracks and roof gutters worldwide, Bryum argenteum is probably the most widely distributed moss on the planet. The silvery cast comes from colourless cells at the leaf tips, which reflect excess light away from the photosynthetic tissue below.
That adaptation is the key to its behaviour. It is built to survive full sun and repeated total desiccation, reviving within minutes of rainfall. Give it constant humidity and shade instead and the colourless tips are useless, the shoots stretch, and the cushion loses the compact silvery quality that made it interesting.
It suits open dish gardens, dry-scape trays and the exposed tops of rock features. In a sealed build it survives longer than hair cap moss but slowly turns dull green and shapeless.
Ceratodon purpureus: the fire moss
Ceratodon forms low olive to yellow-green turf on burnt ground, roofs, gravel and disturbed acidic soil. Its common name comes from the reddish-purple seta that carries the capsule, which appears in profusion and is genuinely handsome under a lens.
It is exceptionally tolerant of heat, metals and poor substrate, and it is one of the first colonisers after fire. Indoors it will accept a wider range of conditions than most urban species, provided it gets strong light and a dry-back between waterings.
Use it as a matrix species in open, sunny arrangements where a carpeting pleurocarp would scorch. On a bright windowsill tray it will hold colour where Hypnum bleaches out.
Wall crevice specialists
Tortula muralis, the wall screw-moss, grows in tiny cushions on mortar and limestone, tolerating both alkaline substrate and severe drought. Its leaves end in a long clear hair point, giving the dry cushion a frosted look that is unmistakable once you have seen it.
Grimmia species occupy the same niche on acid rock and are hoarier still. Both groups need mineral substrate with almost no organic content: crushed limestone or mortar rubble for Tortula, granite grit for Grimmia.
These are display specimens rather than landscape material. A single cushion on a piece of weathered stone in an open bowl, misted twice a week and given real light, is a far better use of them than any attempt to integrate them into a humid forest scene.
Why humidity kills them
Desiccation-tolerant mosses spend most of their lives dormant and metabolise only in short bursts after rain. Their tissues are adapted to that intermittent pattern, and continuous hydration keeps them respiring at a rate their form was never built to sustain.
The practical consequence is etiolation followed by rot. Shoots elongate looking for light, cushions open up and lose their density, and the humid microclimate at the base invites the fungi and bacteria that a daily dry-back would have suppressed.
If you take one rule from this piece: species that grow where water disappears within hours need water that disappears within hours indoors too. Matching the rhythm matters more than matching the average moisture level.
Collecting responsibly and cleaning up
Urban moss is the one category where small-scale collection carries little ecological cost, since pavement colonies are frequently scraped away anyway. Even so, check local rules, never lift from a wall you do not own, and take fragments rather than whole cushions.
Assume urban material is dirty. Rinse thoroughly in dechlorinated water, pick out grit, seed and insect debris by hand, and quarantine for a fortnight in a separate container before anything joins an established build.
Expect passengers. Pavement moss commonly carries springtails, mites, liverwort fragments and vascular seed. The springtails are welcome; the seed will germinate into weeds at exactly the wrong moment and should be picked out as it appears.
